Baja By Car Or Plane

BAJA BY CAR
There is no  car deposit for a drive to Baja, unlike traveling to other parts of Mexico.  For a quick trip to Baja, that is, a visit of less than 72 hours you probably do not have to have a travel visa.  However, if you are planning to go further south or stay for a longer period of time, you will need all of your proper paperwork.

Passports are technically required but are rarely asked for. The Tourist Visa is available at the border, as soon as you cross into Tijuana. This is the most convenient place to get one and then you can head south!

Crossing the border, be sure to keep in the right lane. As soon as you enter Mexico, keep right, enter the secondary inspection station and then park your vehicle. When you get out of your vehicle, go to the small offices under the flags. You will see a door that says "Customs Declaration" in small letters and "AUTOPAGO" in large letters. This is where you will get your tourist card. If there is no one there, go out through the back door and  turn right. You will see the Immigration Office about 75 yards away with a sign that reads "Institute Nacional Migration" in small letters and the initials "INM" in large letters. You will need either a passport or  an original/certified birth certificate and a driver's license.  You will get a card which you are required to fill out.  The border official will retain the original, and give you a stamped copy, stapled with a receipt. The $180 peso travel visa fee (about $19 U.S.) is payable within 72 hours of your arrival.   If you did not get yours at the border, there is a 24 hour bank two  doors down from the Tourist Card office, Banco Biliao Vizcaya (BBV). . If you do pay for your Tourist Card fee here, take your receipt back to the office where you initially obtained the form. Be sure and keep your tourist card handy as you may be asked for it during your travels in Baja.  Most other banks are open from 9 to 5 PM and can take your money and issue a receipt attached to the tourist card.  At border crossings, try to have pesos to pay for the tourist card although they will accept American money.  Any further south than Baja and you will definitely need pesos. Your visa is good for six months.

FLYING TO BAJA
If you are traveling to Baja by plane you will need a passport  or a driver's license and an original (or certified) birth certificate before the airline will give you a boarding pass. Once on the plane, you will get a Tourist Card to complete which must be filled out and taken  to the airport immigration desk when you land. The fee for this card is generally included in the airline ticket price. You must keep the stamped lower copy given to you as you will need this to get back home by plane.
