Nude Beach Guidelines
If you are considering a vacation in Baja and are looking for a nude beach, you should know that an international advocacy movement has produced guidelines for acceptable behavior on nude beaches. Nude beach etiquette is a combination of good sense and following those guidelines:
- Typically, you will see that the nude acceptable areas of many beaches are marked with signs. Often though, the boundaries between nude free zones intersect with areas that do not want nude sunbathers. The polite thing to do is wear a towel, or slip on your bathing suit before crossing over one of these areas. It is as important to respect the boundaries of non-nude bathers as much as nude bathers want to be respected for their choices.
- Nude sunbathing is not about sex and sexual activity. It does not give one license to behave in an overtly sexual manner. It can lead to confrontation and in fact, harassment, and open sexual displays are illegal. Police will arrest such offenders
- As with anywhere, do not litter. Bring a bag or container precisely so that you can take your trash with you leaving the site as pristine as you found it. Many nude friendly areas are well hidden and to leave garbage will spoil the area and even harm wildlife with plastic bags or tabs from pop bottles. And don’t forget to take your cigarette butts with you as well.
- Be observant of your surroundings when looking for parking spots for your car. Sometimes, you have to transverse private property to get to a particular secluded area so you need to look for signs that say it is OK. Just be as mindful as you would if it were your property.
- Dunes are fragile ecosystems that cannot take the punishment of human traffic and they are best avoided.
- Taking photographs without consent of the subject is an absolute no-no. It is intrusive, rude and can land you in legal hot water.
- Your travel kit is important so you can bring what you need to the beach. Off the beaten path, you won’t find amenities and you need to plan for it. First, take plenty of sunscreen and limit your exposure in direct sun. If you can take an umbrella for some shade. Take drinking water, a snack, a garbage bag, toilet paper and a towel or swim suit.
- Everyone’s buy-in to these guidelines is necessary to the continuation of the liberal attitude in Baja for nude sun bathing.
-
A word of advice: if you are not used to exposing your private parts to full sunshine, you will burn badly. Use lots of sunscreen regularly.
